A committee with Bulgaria's Parliament is set to debate on Tuesday a draft bill that supports the introduction of online voting.

The head of Parliament's legal committee, Danail Kirilov (from the main ruling GERB party) is quoted by Dnevnik.bg as saying he will propose that amendments to electoral law should be adopted by the end of April to allow citizens to vote online.

In his words, it is not yet clear whether the change will be implemented only to help Bulgarians living abroad. One of the reasons supporters of remote voting have cited in defense of the step is the need to encourage expats to get involved in the political process.

A referendum was held on October 25 resulted in nearly three-quarters of voters backing the move.

However, voter turnout was below the needed threshold of 3.5 million (the number of people who cast a ballot in the last election) to make the outcome binding.

Instead, with activity going beyond 20%, the result obliged MPs to have a say on online voting.
