Turkey Arrests One Suspect over Istanbul Suicide Attack

Turkish authorities arrested a suspect believed to have been involved in the deadly suicide attack in Istanbul on Tuesday.

This was announced by Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala on Wednesday during a joint press conference with his German counterpart Thomas de Maiziere.

Ala assured that Turkey is seriously inspecting the attack and its perpetrators, with the investigations to continue in a multi-directional way.

The suicide bomber, who has been identified as Syrian linked to Islamic State (IS), blew himself up in the popular tourist area of Sultanahmet square in central Istanbul.

The suicide bomber was not among the list of suspects monitored by police.

The attack claimed the lives of eleven people, all of whom foreign tourists and left fifteen other injured.

Eleven people still remained injured at hospital, among whom nine Germans, one Norwegian and one Peruvian.

Two of the injured German citizens were in critical condition.

Following the attack, Turkey detained numerous IS suspects in large-scale operations held across the country.

Ala highlighted that until now 3318 people have been detained as part of anti-IS operations and 2894 foreign nationals have been deported from Turkey.
