The partnership between Bulgaria and the United States in countering drug trafficking activity in the Balkans received a boost on Thursday with the opening of a USD 1.9 M headquarters building of a joint task force of the respective law enforcement agencies of the two countries, officials said.

The new headquarters building of the joint task force of Bulgaria’s General Directorate for Combatting Organized Crime (GDBOP) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) symbolizes “a new beginning” as well as “the exceptionally good partnership” between Bulgarian and U.S. agencies and “the tangible results of our cooperation,” Bulgaria’s Minister of the Interior Rumyana Bachvarova said at the inauguration ceremony, according to a news release from the Ministry of the Interior.

These results can be seen in the successful seizures of thousands of kilograms of drugs, Bachvarova said.

The new facility, funded by the U.S. European Command, will provide a secure environment that will foster the strong operational partnership between GDBOP and DEA, the U.S. Charg? d’Affaires Martina Strong said at the ceremony.

“Ours is a strategic, broad partnership that encompasses cooperation in many areas,” Strong said, according to a news release from the U.S. Embassy in Sofia. “We work together as allies on securing our countries from existing and new threats and new challenges.”
