A suspected terrorist attack led to the evacuation of two major railway stations in Munich on Thursday.

Police informed of “two concrete tips” of planned suicide attacks with “Islamist background”, with the threat linked to Islamic State (IS).

On Thursday, police warned of a possible terrorist attack, advising citizens to avoid large crowds and the main railway station and the one in Pasing.

The tips specifically referred to the two train stations, with the attacks planned for midnight.

A foreign intelligence service informed of the attack on Thursday, with some reports suggesting that the information came from France.

Calm has returned in the course of the night and the two stations have reopened.

European cities were on high alert for a possible terrorist attack on New Year’s Eve, with celebrations cancelled or limited in some places.

All official events in Brussels were called off after three people had been detained in connection with a suspected attack planned for New Year’s Eve.

In a separate case, Belgian police arrested tenth suspect over the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris last year, which had claimed the lives of 130 people.

The traditional fireworks display in Paris was also called off, but thousands of people gathered to celebrate on the Champs Elysees.

Security was also heightened in London, Moscow and Berlin, with the fireworks in the Russian capital delayed by five minutes and people not allowed on Red Square.

On Wednesday, Turkish authorities detained two suspected IS members over an alleged plot to carry out two separate attacks in Ankara on New Year’s Eve.

Earlier this week, Austrian authorities warned that major European capitals were at risk of being targeted by a terrorist attack over the festive period.
