Bulgaria’s government has introduced changes to regulations to facilitate the issuing online of identity documents to the country’s nationals residing abroad.

The changes to the Regulation for Issuing Bulgarian Identity Documents and the related price list for consular services at the country’s diplomatic missions are linked to an EU-funded project for the introduction of e-consular services abroad which is being implemented by the Foreign Ministry, the cabinet said in a statement following a weekly meeting on Wednesday.

Upon completion of the project, Bulgarian citizens residing abroad will be able to submit applications online for the renewal of their passports and identity cards using the respective forms that will be available on the Foreign Ministry website.

To do that, the applicants will have to have a valid electronic signature, to have been issued a Bulgarian identity document in the last 59 months prior to application date and to have been taken the necessary biometric data. The payments for the requested services will be made online.
