Turkey President Outlines Plans for Syria Safe Zone

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given details on Ankara's proposal that a safe zone should be set up in Syria as a step to address the migrant crisis.

In an interview with Al Arabiya TV, he has said the zone could become temporary home to refugees currently living in the camps of Turkey who would like to return to their country.

Reaching 45 km into Syrian territory in the beginning, it has to stretch along 98 km of the Turkey-Syrian border, and accommodation for Syrians will be built as part of the project, Erdogan has explained.

Even though funding might be secured through a campaign, the project is met with resistance from a number of countries such as the United States, according to the Turkish head of state.

Bulgaria earlier this year said it supported Turkey's proposal and considered it an important step to address the migrant crisis.
