German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be on the cover of Time Magazine as TIME’s 2015 Person of the Year.

Second place went to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State group. The Republican candidate for President of the United States in the 2016  elections, Donald Trump, is third.

The title is given to those who have “for good or for ill" influenced most the news and the world over the past year.

Time Magazine named the 61-year-old German political leader for her managing of the Europe's debt crisis in the summer and for her current dealing with the refugee crisis and the threat of terrorism in Europe.

Merkel is the first individual woman to receive the “Person of the Year” recognition since Time changed its title from “Man of the Year” in 1999. The tradition of selecting a “Man of the Year” began in 1927, with Time editors contemplating news makers of the year.

Merkel competed in a closed category of eight nominees, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Previous winners of TIME’s Person of the Year are the healthcare workers fighting Ebola in Africa (2014), Pope Francis (2013), US President Barack Obama (2012).
