Latvian PM Resigns Amid Rivalries in Ruling Coalition

Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma announced on Monday her resignation.

The announcement was made after a meeting between Straujuma and Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis, The Baltic Times informs.

Straujuma did not provide further details on her resignation, but the most likely causes are the rivalries within the ruling center-right coalition and discontent with her leadership.

Following the parliamentary elections in October 2014, a ruling coalition between the Unity party, the Nationalist Alliance and the Union of Greens and Farmers came to power in November 2014.

This was the second term of Straujuma as prime minister after she had previously headed the government between January and November 2014.

During her second term, the government managed to adopt two annual national budgets, completed the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU and achieved an economic growth of 3.3 %.

Among the other economic achievements were increase in wages, rise in exports and 6 % growth in investments.
