Islamic State (IS) militants claimed responsibility for the shooting in San Bernardino in southern California on Wednesday, which claimed the lives of fourteen people and left 21 injured.

Militants of IS described the two perpetrators, who stormed a Christmas party at the county department of public health as “supporters” of the terrorist group.

The terrorists made the statement on their official radio station on Saturday, CNN informs.

Tashfeen Malik and her husband Syed Rizwan Farook were killed after a manhunt and shootout with security forces.

On Friday, the FBI announced that it is treating the shooting as an “act of terrorism” as there was evidence of extreme planning and also due to the two perpetrators' recent travels to the Middle East.

IS used the word “supporters” rather than previous references of “knights” or “soldiers”, meaning that the militant group might not have directed or ordered the attack.

Earlier it emerged, that the female attacker had pledged allegiance to the leader of IS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in a post on Facebook.
