Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed his readiness to hold a meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over the incident of last week when Ankara fighter jets downed a Russia plane for allegedly violating Turkish airspace.

In a conversation held late on Sunday, Erdogan told Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev he was still willing to discuss the developments of last Tuesday, in line with the proposal he made to Putin last week.

Kazakhstan Presidency's website quotes Nazarbayev as saying both countries should work had to "preserve" bilateral ties built over decades and suggesting a two-way committee should be set up to look into the incident.

The latest development comes as Russia is introducing sanctions against Turkey and freezing cooperation in a number of areas.
