Bulgaria’s opposition nationalist party Ataka has staged protest action in front of Turkey’s Embassy building in Sofia on Thursday over the downing of a Russian warplane by Turkish Air Force.

Some 150 people have taken part in the rally under the motto ‘Turkey has declared war on Russia; on which side are we?’, according to local media reports.

Ataka leader Volen Siderov called for Bulgaria's coalition government to resign over what he described as lack of clear attitude toward Tuesday’s downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber by a Turkish F-16 jet fighter near the border between Syria and Turkey.

The Bulgarian government said on Wednesday that the country and its allies in NATO and the EU are interested in the fast de-escalation of the tensions resulting from the incident. The government also said that solutions must be sought on a bilateral basis through active contacts between Moscow and Ankara.

Ankara says the Russian plane has violated its air space and ignored warnings to change course, while Moscow says its bomber flew in Syrian airspace when a Turkish air-to-air missile hit it.
