Sixteen people have been detained after an hours-long police operation in Brussels on Sunday, Belgian police have confirmed.

Most media outlets quote officials as saying that Salah Abdeslam, the man sought over the attacks in Paris last Friday, is not among the detained.

Sunday's operation left the center of Brussels paralyzed and blocked, with residents told to stay home and far from windows.

The raids followed a decision by authorities to extend the highest level terror alert currently in force after the attacks and the manhunt which followed. This means schools, universities and public institutions will remain closed on Monday.

A number of media outlets announced they would not cover ongoing developments of the police operation after being asked to do so by police. On Facebook and Twitter (with the hashtag #BrusselsLockdown), images of cats were trending for the time of the operation - and still are, as of Monday morning.

Police carried out 22 raids across the capital Brussels but also the city of Charleroi, where one person was detained.

Brussels has remained on lockdown for more than 48 hours as authorities fear an attack similar to the one in Paris might be carried out.
