Oxfam-funded Report Accuses Bulgaria of Police Abuse of Migrants

The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights has accused Bulgarian police of brutality towards migrants in a new report funded by British charity Oxfam.

The report of alleged abuses is based on the testimony of migrants walking through from Bulgaria into Serbia. The migrants claim that they had been subject to beatings and extortion by Bulgarian police.

The Bulgarian government has not yet commented on the alleged abuse of refugees.

Stefano Baldini, Oxfam director for South East Europe, said: "These testimonies present a consistent picture of alleged incidents in Bulgaria.

Baldini called for the European Union has to intervene and “take concrete action to protect basic human rights within its borders."
