ITU Moves to Enable Civil Aircraft Tracking by Satellite

Paricipants in the World Radiocommunication Conference in Geneva have agreed to allocate radiofrequency spectrum for global flight tracking in civil aviation, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced on Wednesday.

The agreement follows the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 in March 2014 while on a routine flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The mysterious disappearance of the aircraft with 239 people on board has spurred worldwide discussions on the need for global flight tracking.

The allocation of frequencies for reception of signals from aircraft by space stations “will enable real-time tracking of aircraft anywhere in the world,” commented Francois Rancy, Director of the ITU Radiocommunication Bureau.

The frequency band 1087.7-1092.3 MHz is currently being used to transmit signals from aircraft to terrestrial stations within line-of-sight. The World Radiocommunication Conference has now allocated this frequency band in the Earth-to-space direction to enable transmissions from aircraft to satellites in space orbit.
