Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta submitted his resignation on Wednesday, AGERPRES news agency informs.

The news comes after a mass protest in Bucharest on Tuesday, which called for the government's resignation over the fire and explosion at the Colectiv night club in the Romanian capital last week, which claimed the lives of 32 people and left hundreds injured.

The news of the prime minister's resignation was announced by his fellow party member and leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea.

Later, Ponta himself announced his resignation in a brief statement to the media at Victoria Palace in Bucharest.

In his address, he noted the legitimate discontent in society, which has arisen following the tragedy at the Colectiv night club.

Ponta added that it would be a "grave mistake" to ignore the wish of the people and expressed readiness to submit his resignation, which is expected by an important part of Romanian society.

According to him, it would be unfair to leave the responsibility on the people in the field or on mayors, state secretaries and ministers.

In his words, the suffering and anger of people should not degenerate in political games with negative effects.
