Turkish authorities prevented 87 refugees from crossing into Greece and Bulgaria near the border city of Edirne on Monday, dailysabah.com reported.

The refugees from Iran, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia have opted for the land route across Turkey’s northwestern border in their attempt to reach Europe as weather conditions in the Aegean Sea are worseninig.

Although Turkey’s border with Bulgaria and Greece is  more strictly controlled than the perilous sea route which migrants and refugees take to reach Greece, “some refugees turn to Edirne for a journey on foot to Europe,” the Turkish daily newspaper said.

Turkish police and gendarmerie forces prevented thousands of migrants gathered at makeshift camps near Edirne from crossing into Greece in September.
