The Bulgarian people should stand up for its positions and act within its role of "the big actor on stage" who has the final say, President Rosen Plevneliev has opined.

Voting in the second round of local elections taking place some Bulgarian constituencies, he has said people should not "lock [themselves] up behind the doors of their apartments" or to alienate themselves from their own country.

His words come amid reports of low turnout in different constituencies which are yet to pick their city or district mayor.

The head of state has also criticized the post-election chaos amid ballot processing in Sofia.

"The media showed an appalling picture of everything that happened in the days after the first round of elections." Having done so many elections, "is it that we cannot learn our lessons, is it that we cannot progress or improve, and that we will always seek explanations from yet another [politician elected by the people] who amended election law in someone's favor?", he asked.
