Bulgarian Students Win Four Medals at International Astronomy Olympiad

Bulgaria’s team at the 20th International Astronomy Olympiad of the Euro-Asian Astronomical Society has won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal, the Education Ministry in Sofia announced on Friday.

Stefan Ivanov, a ninth-grade student at Acad. Nikola Obreshkov High School in Burgas, won gold and was awarded a special certificate for achieving the highest score among all participants.

Georgi Alexandrov and Boyko Borisov, both of them ninth-grade students at Sofia High School of Mathematics, were awarded silver medals. Petar Dimitrov, a ninth-grader at the National High School of Natural Science and Mathematics in Sofia won bronze.

The contest was held from 15 to 23 October 2015 in Kazan, Russia.

The Olympiad was launched in June 1996 as an annual astronomy competition for high-school students aged 14–18 years. The participants in the contest are being challenged to show their imagination, creativity and independent thinking in both theoretical and practical terms.

The competition is held between September and December of each year in one of the astronomical centres of the Olympiad member-states. 

Bulgaria will host the 21st edition of the International Astronomy Olympiad next year.
