Ventsislav Angelov, a mayoral candidate in the northern Bulgarian town or Ruse, is now being sought nationally after being sentenced to 3.5 years for drug trafficking, prosecutors say.

It took ten days for the final verdict, issued by the Supreme Court of Cassation (VKS) which revised a 6-year sentence to just three-and-a-half years behind bars, to arrive to the Ruse District Prosecutor's Office.

Police failed to find Angelov at his home, the Bulgarian National Television reports.

Ventsislav "Chicago" Angelov will have to serve his sentence regardless of the immunity he is granted by taking part in the election campaign, because charges were raised long before the campaign.

The development comes just two days before Bulgaria holds local elections on Sunday, October 25, 2015.

Officially, however, Angelov is still running.

Electoral officials have not yet decided whether or not to remove Angelov's entry from the election lists, explaining he has not yet been imprisoned.
