The new Bulgarian ombudsman, Maya Manolova, will officially assume office on Tuesday in a short handover ceremony involving the incumbent holder of the position Konstantin Penchev.

Later on Tuesday, Manolova will meet with representatives of civic organisations of people with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities and associations of stockbreeders before holding her first reception of citizens.

An hour before the handover ceremony, a protest entitled “Block Maya Manolova” is scheduled to take place in front of the institution's building.

The aim of the protest is to deny the new ombudsman access to its working place, daily Dnevnik informs.

The parliament elected Manolova in a secret ballot in July after 129 MPs voted in favour of her nomination, while the incumbent Penchev garnered the support of 82 MPs.

Hours after her election, a protest opposing her election was staged.

Manolova, who was nominated by her colleagues from the parliamentary group of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), stepped down as MP and swore an oath in October.
