The exhibition "Varna - The Oldest Gold Treasure", which shows golden objects discovered in Bulgaria, was unveiled in the building of the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday.

The treasure, which was unearthed at the Varna Necropolis in 1972, is often considered the oldest golden treasure in the world as it is dated back to 4600-4200 BC.

The treasure was discovered accidentally by Raycho Marinov, who was digging with his excavator in the industrial zone of Varna.

Now, 43 years later, Marinov accompanied the treasure in Brussels, private bTV station informs.

After studying the finds, archaeologists established that the objects belonged to an ancient civilization which inhabited the territory of Bulgaria more than 7000 years ago.

A hundreds of graves containing unique objects and ornaments were unearthed in the necropolis.

Among the honorary guests of the opening of the exhibition were Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, European Council President Donald Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

Bulgarian MEP Emil Radev, who unveiled the exhibition, noted that the treasure is much older than the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilisations.

Radev added that as a native of Varna the treasure has not only a historical, but also a sentimental value for him.

The Bulgarian MEP expressed gratitude to the leaders of the three EU institutions and presented them with replicas of the most famous treasure artifacts.

The treasure will be exhibited in the building of the European Parliament  until the end of the week and is open to both MEPs from the 28 EU member states and the general public.

Juncker expressed his delight to see Borisov at the exhibition and identified him as the “golden boy of Bulgaria”, adding that Bulgaria was a great nation.
