A joint exercise of Bulgarian and United States ground forces will take place at Novo Selo training site, in southeastern Bulgaria, the Defense Ministry in Sofia said on Friday.

A Bulgarian Army unit up to battalion-strong and about 200 personnel of the U.S. Army will take part in the exercise that will run from October 20 to December 15 in three stages - Saber Forward 16-1, Peace Sentinel 16 and Saber Forward 16-2.

Ten U.S. battle tanks, 20 APCs and three 155-mm howitzers will be involved in the exercise that aims to boost the combat readiness of Bulgarian ground forces as well as their interoperability with Allied forces, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The equipment and the military personnel will be arriving at the training site between October 15 and October 17. Part of the equipment will remain stationed at the training site to take part in subsequent joint exercises planned for early 2016.
