The countries of Eastern Europe will need to start forging a common position on the person best placed to win broad international support if they want to grab the opportunity to name the next United Nations Secretary-General, David Clark, chair of the Russia Foundation, has opined.

Eastern Europe is the only one of the five regional groupings in the world organization never to have held the job.

Now, with the UN General Assembly having reaffirmed in a recent resolution its support for the practice of rotating the position between regions and Russia having declared its support for an Eastern European woman to become Secretary-General, “most of the major obstacles now lie within Eastern Europe itself,” Clark writes in a blog post published on the Financial Times website.

Bulgaria’s Irina Bokova, the current head of UNESCO, “is considered to be a front-runner,” the author says.
