Bulgarian authorities declared a state of emergency in the village of Belozem, located in the province of Plovdiv late on Monday.

The measure was taken after the torrential rainfall had flooded the ground floors of ten houses and several streets.

This was announced by the mayor of Rakovski municipality, Ivan Antonov, daily Dnevnik informs.

Antonov assured that the situation is not dramatic and no threat exists for the population of the village.

The mayor added that the rain had stopped, but despite this the situation has not improved rapidly.

Crews of the water supply and sewage company, firefighters and the Interior Ministry's Chief Directorate Fire Safety and Civil Protection are working on draining the village.

Antonov expressed opinion that it is likely for the state of emergency to be lifted later on Tuesday.

The rain also flooded the houses and streets of another village in the area – Bolyarino, but the situation there has remained normal.
