Catalonia is voting in regional elections that may lead to the region’s independence from Spain.

Two separatist parties have joined forces, aiming at a majority of 68 seats in the 135-seat Parliament.

Polls indicate that the main independence group "Junts Pel Si" (Together for Yes, a coalition uniting ruling center-right party Converg?ncia and center-left Esquerra Republicana) and leftist party CUP are likely to secure a majority of seats in the regional parliament, according to reports of the BBC News.

The pro-secession parties vow to declare the northeastern region region independent by 2017 and create a new state.

Spain’s central government has described the plans for unilateral declaration of independence as impossible, pledging to block such moves in court.

More than 5.5 million of Catalonia's 7.5 million inhabitants are eligible to vote.
