Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov assured on Friday that both the incumbent and the previous governments have guarded the country's borders reliably against the refugee influx.

According to him, this has led to redirection of the refugee route through Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Sweden.

However Borisov did not hide his anxiety over the refugee wave as there was information on the potential arrival of further 7-8 million refugees from Syria.

He highlighted that refugees are seeking salvation in the first country they move to and were not choosing their final destination.

The Bulgarian prime minister pointed in an interview for private bTV station that only 40 % of refugees came from Syria.

In his words, the EU was concerned as the greatest influx was yet to come, especially if the forecasts for the arrival of between 8 and 12 million refugees in the next months are fulfilled.

He also commented the misunderstanding on the possibility of Bulgaria hosting a hotspot reception centre, which arose following the extraordinary European Council on Wednesday.

According to him, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had clearly expressed her readiness to help Bulgaria in case the need arises.

Borisov expressed his gratitude to Merkel for the understanding she had demonstrated.

He pointed that he had made enormous efforts to inform EU leaders of the Bulgarian problems arising from the refugee influx.

The prime minister said that Bulgaria did not want to see a development similar to the one in Turkey.

According to him, the argument that he had gone to the European Council in order to seek financial help for the refugees was a planned attack on him.

Borisov once again reiterated that the problem with the refugees could not be solved by Europe before an agreement is reached between Russia and the US.

In his words, if the two powers fail to reach an agreement, bad times will befall Europe.
