Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has assured that the authorities have taken all possible measures to close the border to illegal immigrants.

Speaking Saturday ahead of the inauguration of a wastewater treatment plant in Sozopol, Borisov said that the gendarmerie and the police were keeping refugees 40 kilometers away from the Bulgarian border.

Borisov, as cited by Darik radio, noted that border patrols prevented them from entering the country.

He made clear that only cars and trucks were currently allowed to cross the border.

Commenting on the situation in Turkey, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister said that refugees were to meet with the country’s Prime Minister.

Borisov expressed his hopes that the Turkish authorities would manage to bring the situation under control.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister said that an extraordinary EU summit was to be held on Wednesday over the matter, adding that he was unable to say anything soothing to alleviate people’s worries.

He declared that the situation with refugees was a tragedy.

Borisov admitted that building border fences was no solution to the refugee crisis.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister suggested that border fences generated aggression, yet at the same time they helped border guards improve physical security.
