Bulgaria Issues Belgrade-Budapest Route Travel Warning Due to Migrant Crisis in Hungary

Bulgaria on Tuesday warned its citizens to avoid using the main road linking Serbia’s capital Belgrade with Hungary’s Budapest after Hungarian authorities closed Roszke border crossing for cars and passengers to stem migrant influx.

Horgos checkpoint in Serbia opposite Roszke is open but traffic has been halted since mid-afternoon on Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said in a travel notice posted on its website. A large group of migrants has gathered at Horgos checkpoint, protesting at the closure of the border crossings by the Hungarian border authorities and demanding to be allowed to enter Hungary.

Therefore, Bulgarian citizens are advised to refrain from using the route Belgrade-Subotica-Kanjiza-Horgos and choose alternative routes to enter into Hungary.

According to unconfirmed Serbian media reports, traffic has also been halted at the country's Backi Vinogradi crossing at the border with Hungary, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said.

Information updates about the situation at Hungary’s border with Serbia can be found on the Hungarian police website www.police.hu/hirek-es-informaciok/hatarinfo
