President Rosen Plevneliev assured on Thursday that Bulgaria will not allow military cargo airplanes carrying weapons to Syria to fly over its territory.

Plevneliev added that if Russia is honest with its partners and abides by the rules, its airplanes will be allowed to fly above Bulgaria.

His comment came in response to the recent refusal of Bulgaria to allow Syria-bound Russian airplanes overfly its territory.

According to him, the decision of the foreign ministry will not affect the relationship of Bulgaria with Russia.

The Head of State added that the refusal was coordinated with him and he had given the green light.

In his words, this move once again demonstrated that Bulgaria is a loyal member of the EU and NATO, capable of distinguishing between a humanitarian flight and a flight pretending to be such.

He reassured that Bulgaria was a champion of European values and had readiness to say “no” to Russia when in doubt that the rules are not respected.

Furthermore, Bulgaria upheld the common European stance and supported the sanctions against Russia.

Plevneliev expressed hope that Russia will once again become a partner country and return to the negotiation table.

He highlighted that Bulgaria was in favour of solving the Syria problems rather than further deepening them.
