Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski will launch on Thursday the BULRIS river information system monitoring the Bulgarian section of the Danube river.

The cost of the project, which was executed by the Bulgarian Ports Infrastructure Company, is estimated at BGN 37 M, Darik radio informs.

The project involved the development of a modern infrastructure and communication environment for providing information on the navigation of the river.

After carrying out tests of sub-systems in northeastern Bulgaria between August and September 2011, a fully developed telecommunications network was established.

It allows for transmission of information to and from the vessels sailing on the river and maintenance of constant radio contact with the centre of the river information system in Ruse.

The system has been co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through Operational Programme Transport 2007-2013.

It is capable of issuing notices to skippers and monitoring traffic of vessels, water levels, navigation and weather conditions.

The system aims to improve safety and efficiency of inland waterways transport, to protect the environment and facilitate connection with other modes of transport.
