Why has the public in Eastern Europe remained unmoved – compared with Western Europe - by the pictures of the refrigerator truck found abandoned in Austria with 71 dead migrants inside or the drowned Syrian toddler washed ashore on a beach in Turkey?

Is the migrant influx into Europe driving a wedge between the continent’s eastern and western parts?

Ivan Krastev, a Bulgarian political scientist, is offering answers to these and other questions in his opinion piece “Eastern Europe’s Compassion Deficit” published by the New York Times.
