Twelve Bulgarian lamb producers are to unveil on Monday a major project they would like to develop with Qatar, Agriculture Minister Desislava Taneva has said.

Her remarks came on Saturday at a press briefing after a meeting with Qatari Environment Minister Ahmed bin Amir al-Humaidi in Sofia.

Taneva added the forthcoming proposal was the first ever uniting Bulgarian lamb producers seeking to place their output in Qatar. Bulgarian officials have been carrying talks for years to find a way for local meat producers into the Qatari market.

Humaidi for his part stressed the importance of food safety in Qatar. Over the years the country has tended to point to strict food safety requirements as a reason not to go on with proposed projects.

Both ministers said it was likely for Bulgaria and Qatar to sign documents boosting cooperation in agriculture, but neither went into details.

The Doha delegation, including business representatives from the Gulf country, is to be on a visit to Bulgaria until Tuesday at the invitation of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
