Bulgaria Hosting International Southeast European Studies Conference

Bulgaria's capital Sofia is hosting an international Southeast European studies congress from August 31 to September 4.

This has been the third time Bulgaria has ever organized the International Congress of South East European Studies - the last one having been more than two decades ago.

The event will be focused on European integration and the future of Southeast Europe, as well as the migration crisis that the region has been going through, according to Prof Aleksandar Kostov, who works at the Institute for Southeast European Studies in Bulgaria.

This week's agenda, however, includes a range of items from post-Soviet transitions, regional integration and Chinese investment to cuisine and literature throughout history.

Prof Kostov has also told the Bulgarian National Radio that EU affairs are also to be discussed in light of the current membership of some Southeast European countries and the future accession of the others.

The event comes at a time when Bulgaria is three months into the rotational presidency of the Southeastern European Cooperation Process (SEECP), which President Rosen Plevneliev took over from his Albanian counterpart in end-May. Launched on the initiative on Bulgaria in 1996, the SEECP aims at boosting neighborly cooperation among participating states, to place more emphasis on regional decision-making, and also to help EU and NATO accession of the respective countries.
