Austrian authorities found at least twenty dead bodies of migrants in a truck in the eastern province of Burgenland on Thursday.

The bodies were uncovered after the lorry had been standing for some time on the emergency lane of the A4 motorway close to the border with Hungary.

The migrants died some time ago as their bodies have started to decompose, the likely cause of death being suffocation.

The death toll could increase as there are suspicions that the bodies could be up to fifty judging by the size of the vehicle.

Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner described this as a “dark day” and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

She condemned traffickers as criminals and called for an end to the smuggling of refugees in Europe, Deutsche Welle reports.
