Floods Kill 3 in Southern Bulgaria

Bulgaria's second-largest city Plovdiv is gradually recovering after two people died in the region overnight in flash floods caused by torrential rains.

Waters also claimed the life of another man in the town of Kazanlak, northeast of Plovdiv, on Friday.

This comes in an unusually cold week with temperatures falling below 20 in some parts of the country and downpours in most of its regions.

A 50-year-old man's house was struck by lightning in a village near Plovdiv, and set the building on fire. The man died in the flames, private national NOVA TV station reports.

The other victim was a mechanic who was killed by electric shock while trying to switch off the electricity at his workplace as flood waters were rising.

Much of Plovdiv region is affected after some 55 l/sqm fell in just 15 minutes on Friday evening leaving dozens of buildings innundated. Local news websites reported that streets had turned into rivers. The main pedestrian zone in the downtown "started looking like Maritsa" (the river passing through Plovdiv.
