Greece is likely to hold early parliamentary elections on 20 September, Reuters reported on Thursday.

The newswire quoted a government source as saying that "the aim is to hold elections on 20 September".

The source spoke after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met senior party leaders and cabinet ministers to decide the government’s next move.

Tsipras had been expected to call early elections to quell a rebellion within his left-wing Syriza party over a new bailout deal agreed with Greece's international creditors.

The austerity measures needed for the implementation of the EUR 86B deal - tax hikes and cuts in pensions and social benefits - have drawn the anger of Syriza members.

The bailout programme was approved by Greece's parliament last week despite dissent within Syriza and large-scale protests  in front of parliament building.
