A Code Orange warning is in force in five Bulgarian regions on Monday, with heavy downpours and thunderstorms expected after weeks of simmering heat.

All the regions affected are in Northern Bulgaria, namely Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Razgrad and Targovishte. Weather there might be dangerous to health and/or property.

There are also 12 areas placed under Code Yellow, the stormy weather there being considered less hazardous, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology with the Bulgarian Academy of Science has said.

These include the rest of Northern Bulgaria (Silistra, Shumen, Lovech, Pleven, Vratsa) with a few exceptions, as well as a few areas in the south (Sliven, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Kardzhali, Pazardzhik) and the Sofia District (not the city itself).

Just until Sunday nearly nationwide alerts had been in force over potential wildfires, as thermometers had been hitting over 35 degrees for weeks.

Weather forecasts show the cold and rainy spell could last until the end of the week with temperatures about 7-8 degrees lower than in the first part of August.
