The border fence being constructed by Bulgaria to block thousands of migrants hoping for a new life in Europe appears "all but impregnable", the Daily Mail wrote on Sunday.
"As police in Calais struggle to contain thousands trying to storm the Eurotunnel in their desperation to get into Britain, the Bulgarian authorities are shoring up their border with Turkey," the newspaper said in an article which came as French and British authorities were seeking to deter migrants from making their way from France to the UK.
"The local authorities are hoping to put off the ruthless criminal gangs exploiting families fleeing war and terror in Syria, Iraq and North Africa from trying to enter Europe via Bulgaria," it goes on, quoting Bulgaria's border police chief Ivan Stoyanov who said more than 500 migrants were stopped from crossing into the country last month alone, half by Turkish police and half by Bulgarian officers.
"Bulgaria is also drafting in soldiers to fortify its defences against the ISIS terror group as fanatics try to slip back into Europe."
The Daily Mail also reminds of Islamic State (IS) fighters and other terror suspects like Fritz-Joly Joachin (liked to the Charlie Hebdo gunmen who carried out a deadly attack in January) who had successfully entered Bulgaria before security was stepped up.
On the other hand, the report notes, "for thousands of terrified families fleeing the extremists, the fence also represents the end of a desperate dream." Another disadvantage of the fence is that its construction prompts asylum seekers to embark on more dangerous journeys using other routes into the EU.
