Croatia’s Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic has confirmed that she will run for UN Secretary-General.

According to British daily The Independent, Pusic has a good chance of being elected to succeed Ban Ki-moon, whose term in office as UN Secretary-General expires in December 2016.

The newspaper suggests that the informal practice of regional rotation means that the next UN chief should be from Eastern Europe, adding that there is also growing support for a female candidate.

Bulgaria has nominated UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova for the post.

Vesna Pusic, born March 25, 1953, is a sociologist.

She serves as a First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs in the centre-left government of Zoran Milanovic.

She is currently President of the liberal Croatian People’s Party.
