Beijing was chosen as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics at the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

The Chinese capital beat the only other candidate – Almaty, with Beijing garnering 44 votes, while the largest city in Kazakhstan received 40 votes.

Thus, Beijing will become the first city to host both a summer and winter edition of the Olympic Games after the 2008 Summer Olympics were held there.

Following the election, representatives of Beijing and IOC President Thomas Bach signed the Host City Contract (HCH), olympic.org informs.

The contract is made public for the first time as a result of the recommendations of the Olympic Agenda 2020.

The reform package provided in Olympic Agenda 2020 calls for a stronger focus on sustainability, legacy and transparency.

By hosting the Olympic Games, Beijing hopes to accelerate the development of a new sport, culture and tourism area and to encourage interest in winter sports in a region home to more than 300 million people.

Beijing took advantage of the flexibility provided by Olympic Agenda 2020 to improve its plans and reduce costs.

The Chinese capital will heavily rely on existing venues, such as those constructed for the 2008 Olympics, including the iconic Bird's Nest stadium.

The proposed budget of Beijing for investment in Olympic villages, sports venues and other infrastructure amounts to USD 1.5 B, which is considerably less than previous Olympics.

The proposed operational budget should be offset by revenues from the sales of tickets, marketing sponsorships and other income.

Furthermore, the IOC will provide an additional contribution of USD 880 M to the host city.
