Two Protests Call for Genuine Judicial Reform in Downtown Sofia

Two protests calling for genuine judicial reform are taking place near the building of the Bulgarian Parliament on Wednesday.

Participants in one of the protests will drink coffee in support of the judicial reform and the constitutional amendments and against the alternative proposals of the second largest opposition party – DPS.

The other demonstration will be staged by the Plan B organisation, which similarly demands for a genuine judicial reform, daily Dnevnik reports.

The drinking of coffee near the parliament building, which emerged as a form of demonstration during the protests against the government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, was renewed through the social networks.

A facebook event entitled “”Coffee behind the parliament for a genuine judicial reform or #resignation” was created on Tuesday after it became clear that GERB and DPS had failed to reach consensus on the constitutional amendments.

The organisers of the event criticise the proposed constitutional amendments of DPS and call on protesters to gather every morning at the staff entrance of the parliament until MPs understand their demand for a genuine judicial reform.

Meanwhile, the Plan B organisation, which was established in the beginning of the year and is known for its stance against Justice Minister Hristo Ivanov, will also hold a protest behind the parliament in support of a genuine judicial reform.

Early on Wednesday, Bulgarian Prime Minister and leader of the largest ruling party (GERB) Boyko Borisov and leader of the largest opposition party (BSP) Mihail Mikov held a brief meeting at which they failed to reach consensus on the constitutional amendments.
