Romanian prosecutors seized assets of Russian oil giant Lukoil worth up to EUR 2 B in an investigation into alleged tax evasion and money laundering, according to reports of a local court.

In October 2014 police, prosecutors, and customs inspectors conducted searches at Lukoil’s offices near Ploiesti over suspicions of tax evasion and money laundering worth an estimated EUR 230 M, according to reports of Agerpres.

Lukoil’s Petrotel oil refinery shut down for a few days amid the probe.

The Ploiesti court of appeals announced on July 8, 2015 that the investigation had been expanded to include accusations of abuse of company credit and money laundering leveled against the head of the local Petrotel Lukoil S.A. and five other employees.

The court informed that assets worth up to EUR 2 B of Lukoil Europe Holdings Bvatrium Holland had been seized.
