Bulgarian Police Detains 66 Illegal Immigrants in Downtown Sofia

Bulgarian police officers detained 66 illegal immigrants in downtown Sofia on Monday evening.

The policemen were dispatched after receiving a signal for foreigners having settled in an abandoned building, the press service of the Interior Ministry informs.

Following their inspection, authorities uncovered 35 men, 20 women and 11 children at the address.

The foreigners, who according to preliminary information are all Iraqi citizens, have been taken to police departments and will be further passed to competent authorities.

Another eighteen illegally residing foreigners were detained after a police operation in the Sofia district of Ovcha Kupel over the weekend.

On Sunday, ten foreigners were detained as they were getting on two taxis, while another eight were uncovered at a dwelling.

According to preliminary information, all eight people, who were uncovered at the dwelling, were Syrian citizens.

The foreigners and the taxi drivers have been taken to police departments and will be further passed to the competent authorities.
