European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Parliament President Martin Schulz expressed opposition to Greece leaving the eurozone.
Juncker, who spoke in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, said that he is against Grexit and such a development should be clearly avoided.
The Commission President criticised those openly campaigning for Grexit, adding that Greek exit from the eurozone was both a simplistic and wrong answer.
According to him, the EU was all about compromise and the Commission had readiness to return to the negotiating table.
Juncker made it clear that the ball was definitely in the court of the Greek government and called on Athens to explain the "no" vote at the Sunday referendum and the ensuing consequences.
Similarly, Schulz stated that he was in favour of Greece remaining in the eurozone and against Grexit.
According to him, those wanting to split up the Eurozone were wrong, daily Kathimerini quotes him as saying.
Earlier on Sunday, the European Parliament President said that Greece might have to introduce another currency in case the country rejects the bailout terms of the international creditors.
Schulz reassured that he has never demanded the resignation of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
These statements come hours before the forthcoming emergency summit of eurozone heads of state or government, which will be preceded by a meeting of the Eurogroup.
