Bulgaria and Macedonia are due to consider the creation of a joint tourist product which could be offered to tourists from the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia, the head of the country's tourism promotion agency has said.

In his words, Bulgarian tour operators have already shown interest in the move which could bring about benefits to the entire region.

For Macedonia, the Bulgarian market has great potential as a source of visitors, with a 27% increase in the number of tourists from the country last year, Kristiyan Dzhambazovski told the news website Dnevnik.bg in an interview.

He added that Bulgaria is in the Top 5 of countries sending a strong tourist flow to Macedonia.

The official, who runs the Tourism Promotion and Development Agency of Macedonia, explained that, even though the political crisis and the incidents in Kumanovo have taken their toll on the influx of tourists, the attack in May was an "isolated incident", and security is guaranteed.

The agency operates on a budget of about EUR 700 000 a year, and much of this is spent on advertisement in the region, and in Bulgaria respectively.

Tourism accounts for about 2% of the country's GDP, double the share it had just a few years ago.
