At least 34 people are known to have drowned after a ferry carrying 173 passengers on board has capsized in rough waters in the central Philippines.

Most of the survivors were immediately rescued, but about 30 are missing, CNN quotes Philippine National Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon as saying.

The vessel capsized just 200 m off the coast.
