Bulgaria will be hosting 14 US tanks for military training at the Novo Selo polygon, as stated by Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev in an interview for bTV news Wednesday.

He noted that there will be a total of 250 tanks that will be sent to a total of six Eastern European countries. The announcement had been made by US Defense Minister Ash Carter June 23.

Upon the completion of the NATO training held in Bulgaria the tanks will move to Romania.

Nenchev said that he was in no way surprised by the operation and that all NATO missions are well coordinated and planned way in advance.

He added that in case the troops and military equipment are to be permanently deployed in the country, the Parliament will need to approve that first. Nenchev said that this is not the case as of now.

In his words, there will be an increased number of military trainings in Bulgaria over the course of the year but that can only prove to be beneficial for the country. He said that in the light of the conflict in Ukraine, ISIS terrorist attacks and the possible political instability in Greece, Bulgaria needs to be well prepared.

‘’We will be protecting our own airspace,’’ Nenchev noted. He further expressed his hope that the Parliament will approve the purchasing of military aircraft later on today.

In the Minister’s words, a rehabilitation of several MiG aircraft will be necessary and that the procedure will most probably be conducted in Poland.
