Romania Gives Green Light to Building 2 NATO Centers

Romania's Parliament has passed a motion to authorize the construction of two NATO facilities in the capital Bucharest, in a move President Klaus Iohannis says is crucial to security in Eastern Europe.

Approved overwhelmingly by MPs, the move is needed "within the context of the Ukraine crisis" and "the aggressive actions of Russia in the regions," AP quotes the head of state as saying.

The two centers are to become fully operational by 2018 and will be in charge of coordinating military command in both Romania and Bulgaria.

Last year's developments in Ukraine prompted NATO to announce a major refocusing of strategy in Eastern Europe to counter potential threats that it believes could stem from Russia.

Poland, Bulgaria and the Baltics will therefore have similar centers set up as well, and according to the latest plans of the Alliance will also station heavy equipment in the near future.
