This year's edition of Sofia Pride that is due to be held on June 27 will focus its attention to the issue of discrimination in the field of education.

The statement was made by Radoslav Stoyanov, one of the organizers of the parade on behalf of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, as reported by the Bulgarian National Radio.

''The reason for that specific issue to be chosen was a research conducted in 2012 by the Fundamental Rights agency to the EU, '' he said. '' This is the most all encompassing study on the homosexual and transgendered people among all EU state members. One of the things that had to be established was that more than 70% of the people surveyed have been subjected to bullying in educational institutions.''

In the words of Stoyanov, young people are often too embarrassed to share the problem and teachers are not prepared to take the responsibility of leading the conversation.

''These issues also need an institutional decision and development of government policies, '' Stoyanov added. '' There need to be rules on how people should react in certain situations when young people with a different sexual preference are being attacked.''

The Sofia Pride organizers have further expressed their hope that there will be more people coming to the event this year.

The parade's last year edition has caused major controversy, with political parties and the Orthodox Church condemning it, while international organizations and diplomats largely expressing their support.
