The 3-month moratorium on timber exports, which was imposed by the Bulgarian government in order to secure a timeframe to prepare legal amendments aimed at stemming illegal logging, expires on Tuesday.

Industry representatives staged vocal protests against the ban, saying that it cost them BGN 40 M, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Bulgaria’s Parliament had to review changes to the Forest Act last Friday but the meeting was cancelled due to the lack of a quorum.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Georgi Kostov is to explain on Tuesday whether an extension of the moratorium is necessary and to shed light on the measures drafted by the government against illegal logging.
